When being a Who fan results in personal injury…

thescarf1.jpg

Being a Doctor Who fan isn’t all fun and games… especially when it involves a scarf that’s typically over 12 feet long… consider this a Doctor Who PSA of sorts…

I’m sure many of us have made the iconic Doctor Who Scarf for ourselves or loved ones.

I’m not ashamed to admit the length took some getting used to. Getting stuck in subway or car doors, or really any door for that matter, is somewhat of a Who-head rite of passage…

Stories from fellow fans like this one from TheCraftyCat (craftster.org) remind us of the dangers of being such a devoted fanatic:

He was driving down the interstate at 65mph, and failed to notice when he got in the car that part of the scarf was outside the door. The scarf got caught in the rear tire, nearly strangling him. He was able to pull over safely, and no one was hurt … But, yeah, word of warning - be careful if you wear that scarf in a car.

… also, be very careful with revolving doors… it creates quite a scene and I assure you, your friends will enjoy hours of comedy at your expense…

My Dalek Empire: Roundup

Okay, I’m finally all caught up with posting about my already completed Daleks. That took way longer than expected (I’ve once again discovered I am not a photographer).

In the upcoming weeks, I’d like to give these guys their own project page, which will include a tutorial on how they’re made…

Building My Dalek Empire: The Mutants

After I’d finishing the first two Daleks, I thought it only right that they have their own Kaled-mutant friends…

Kaled Mutant (version 1.0)

Like any 1.0, this first guy’s got some lovable flaws. This was my first attempt at kinda trying to felt… It didn’t work so well (now I know felt first, stuff later!). He’s still soft and cuddly though!

Mini Dalek Sec Mutant (version 1.0)

This guy goes with the Mini Dalek Sec (I’d finished him before the “Daleks in Manhattan” episode catastrophe, and I still think Sec’s mutant should have been black).

My favorite part about him is that, thanks to an idea I got from craftster.org, his little tentacles (with the help of pipe cleaners) are fully poseable.

Building My Dalek Empire: Mini Dalek Sec

After Doomsday my fiance requested his own Dalek Sec so it could sit on his desk.

After years of being a crocheter, I had recently learned how to knit (unrelated hand injuries had made crocheting painful, so I was forced to seek out alternative methods). I didn’t think knitted fabric would be as suited for my purposes, but I gave it a shot:

Mini Dalek Sec (version 1.0)

I tried to make this guy more cartoon-like features: overly large eye stalk, and appendages. Other than that, he’s very close to scale (1:10), largely due to my discovery of Project Dalek. They have these fantastic pdf guides that really helped me to solidify many of the more intricate aspects.

Now that I’m confident that knitting is a viable option, I am ambitiously working on a much larger Dalek Sec.
