Torchwood = Methadone

Being a tad behind, I’ve just watched the season premier of Torchwood. Even though it was really quite odd, I was oddly drawn to it. Then it hit me…

Torchwood is the methadone of Doctor Who fandom…

… and I loved the end of the world reference

When being a Who fan results in personal injury…

thescarf1.jpg

Being a Doctor Who fan isn’t all fun and games… especially when it involves a scarf that’s typically over 12 feet long… consider this a Doctor Who PSA of sorts…

I’m sure many of us have made the iconic Doctor Who Scarf for ourselves or loved ones.

I’m not ashamed to admit the length took some getting used to. Getting stuck in subway or car doors, or really any door for that matter, is somewhat of a Who-head rite of passage…

Stories from fellow fans like this one from TheCraftyCat (craftster.org) remind us of the dangers of being such a devoted fanatic:

He was driving down the interstate at 65mph, and failed to notice when he got in the car that part of the scarf was outside the door. The scarf got caught in the rear tire, nearly strangling him. He was able to pull over safely, and no one was hurt … But, yeah, word of warning - be careful if you wear that scarf in a car.

… also, be very careful with revolving doors… it creates quite a scene and I assure you, your friends will enjoy hours of comedy at your expense…

“Doctor Who” S3 on Sci-Fi Channel

Doctor Who on the Sci-Fi Channel

Doctor Who S3 finally lands state-side on the Sci-Fi Channel today, with future episodes on Friday nights at 8pm (est).

I’m looking forward to (re)watching the entire series again. It’s always interesting to see the reactions of the new viewers (i.e. those not rabid enough to find their own means of watching DW episodes the second they’re out) in the OG forums.

Dalek Gelth and other finale wtf-ness

Hmmm… Toclafane… really…

These mechanic-looking beings came from a void-ish type hole, turns out they’re simply vehicles for a mutated creature

… and wait… hey, I know that voiceGelth? Is that you?

Although, I will admit, that being pro-Dalek I am very, very, very glad the Daleks weren’t called upon to save the day again… After two series finales, I think they deserve some well-earned time off!

The Tardis Key

I thought it would be incredibly cool to have a replica of the Tardis key… After some research with the S1 DVDs, I managed to figure out it was made my some British company. I emailed them the screenshots I’d found, and asked if they could pinpoint which product it was. I was pretty amazed when I got a response (most American companies would’ve ignored a request like that).

ERA Tardis Key
Here are the details:
It’s the ERA Traditional Lock (see page 4 their pdf product sheet for more details), Models 133-81, 135-81, 133-31, 133-32, et cetera…

Now for the hard part, finding some way to get it stateside…

DW makes it to EW.com’s “The Sci-Fi 25″

Doctor Who came in 23 in Entertainment Weekly’s “The Sci-Fi 25″. Yes, I know, it should’ve easily taken the #1 spot… but hey, I’m impressed that the show’s gotten any attention in American press.

Doctor Who reference seen on “The Colbert Report”

For us state-side fans, Who-references in anything pop-culture-ish are few and far between… So, I am thrilled to report that I personally witnessed one such Who-nod last night on the Colbert Report.

Take a peak at the video, it happens about 1:35 in…
(And I’m so happy, I won’t even knit pick about the use of Dr. vs Doctor)

Stuff no good “Dome-head” should be without

Here’s a quick run-down of some newly coveted items:

The Dalek Survival Guide

Self-explanatory. Unfortunately, this book is kinda hard to find.

Sonic Screwdriver LED Torch

Thankfully, this saves me from attempting to make my own.

Dalek Phone Charm

While this seems like it’d be little clunky to hang on a cell, it would be a nice adornment for a bag or the like.

Dalek Tote Bag

A nice tote for carrying around necessities (like the Sonic Screwdriver, Dalek Survival Guide, and hey, you could even hang the charm off it).

“I am a Dalek” by Gareth Roberts

Short synopsis: The 10th doc and Rose encounter a Dalek in present-day England…

Okay, so obviously, with a Dalek, this book gains instant likability points and old-school fans will definitely appreciate some of the references to the classic Whoniverse. Unfortunately, as a “Quick Read” book, anyone over twelve might feel a bit silly reading this in public.
